What You Should Think About When Picking Your New Apartment

Choosing a new apartment is exciting, but let’s face it – it’s also stressful. You might feel overwhelmed by the options and the process in general, but when it comes to finding that perfect spot for your lifestyle, it all comes down to the amenities.

Are you the type of person who won’t be happy without a gym, or is that something that would be nice to have, but not exactly a necessity? Do you need in-unit laundry? How about a walkable neighborhood? All of these things are important, and some of them might even be things that you’ve never considered. Here are a few things you should think of before committing to that year-long lease.

The Clark Building view

The location. While a few years ago, everyone wanted to live in Lawrenceville, the city has opened up in new and exciting ways since then. Ask yourself what it is you hope to get out of a location rather than focusing on a specific neighborhood – are you hoping to walk to bars and restaurants, or would you prefer to be closer to work? Are city views important, or would you rather have a green space?

The day-to-day activities. Many apartments offer things like happy hour meet-ups, gym classes, game day parties and other activities for their residents, but if you’re not exactly a “joiner,” you could start to feel like you’re paying for things that you don’t use. Do some research about the day-to-day activities and consider how much you’d actually take advantage of them.

A swanky gym. Gyms are some of the most sought-after amenities in an apartment, so if that’s at the top of your list, don’t settle for an apartment with a dated gym – or worse, no gym at all. Take a look at to see the sort of standard of gym/fitness suite that you should be aspiring for. You might also want to do the math to see how much you’d save if you got to cancel your current gym membership and roll it into your new monthly rent.

A pool. Pittsburgh isn’t exactly tropical, but once those 90-degree summer days set in, you might start to wish you had a pool to retreat to. This is a biggie because when you look at an apartment in the cooler months, it might not be something you consider quite so much. Keep it in the front of your mind now and you might thank yourself once August rolls around.

The laundry facilities. Three words: In. Unit. Laundry. If this isn’t something you can live without, put it at the top of your list.
