Eat Cheap: $10 Dinner Challenge

There are a lot of challenges that we don’t quite understand — the Tide Pod Challenge, for example. But our $10 Dinner Challenge is one that we think everyone can get behind. The concept is simple: we challenged ourselves to make the tastiest, most elegant-feeling meal that we could (think sides, entree and dessert) for just $10. In the coming months, we’ll challenge some of Pittsburgh’s best chefs and personalities to do the same.

It wasn’t as easy as heading in to Whole Foods and filling our cart with everything that catches our eye, but once all was said and done, we’d have to say that it actually wasn’t that difficult, either. Whether you’re on a budget or just hoping to minimize your food purchases, this $10 meal is one that you’ll definitely want to try out.

The Main Course: Lobster Ravioli
Trader Joe’s Lobster Ravioli – $3.49 for a nine-ounce package
Drizzle of olive oil
Shredded fresh Parmesan cheese –  ~$2.50

It may sound too good to be true, but this TJ’s lobster ravioli rings in at just $3.49 for a package that could easily serve two people. Cook them as directed, then drizzle with some good olive oil (free, since it’s a kitchen staple) and some fresh Parmesan cheese on top.

Total: $5.99

The Side: Wilted Arugula  Salad With Lemon-Garlic Dressing

Bag of arugula – $1.99
Olive oil
Lemon – $.50
Garlic clove – less than $.50 for a head of fresh garlic
Grated Parmesan (above)

Mix all of the dressing ingredients together and warm them in the microwave. Drizzle on top for a perfectly wilted, flavorful arugula side salad.

Total: $2.99

The Dessert: Trader Joe’s Dark Chocolate Covered Almonds

‘Cause everyone likes a little sweet treat after dinner.

Total: $.99

Dinner Total: $9.97

…and a total dinner success, in our humble opinion!
