Cure for February: LumberjAxes
Even though February has been good to us so far (like that 60° & sunny Sunday we just had), and that famed groundhog says that an early spring is coming, we aren’t out of the woods just yet. So if you find yourself feeling like the walls in your apartment are a little closer than they are in, say, June or July, then we have the perfect way to get some of that pent-up energy out: ax throwing!
With two locations in up-and-coming Millvale and Mt. Lebanon, LumberjAxes was the first ax throwing venue in Pittsburgh (and if you ask us, it’s also the best). From the outside, the building looks like your grandpa’s VFW, but as soon as you step through the door, it looks like anything but.
The massive space hums (reservations are a must here) with scores of people throwing axes in orderly lanes that run the length of the space, from seasoned pros to first timers. And if you’re like us and think ax throwing sounds slightly intimidating, no worries; the friendly team here gets you and your group set up on your lane and gives everyone a thorough rundown of ‘how-tos’ before anyone starts throwing. Only then does the fun begin. Get ready to be impressed that the friend that you’d least expect is super good at it, and to make fun of your friend that spends too much time at the gym and thinks that throwing the ax as hard as they can will work (tip: it won’t — its more about the technique than the strength). To make the most of the night, make sure to bring some snacks and drinks; we recommend a pit stop at Grist House before your lane time.
More than the ax throwing, maybe our favorite thing about LumberjAxes is the design. The chalet-chic space was overhauled by HGTV Design Star Luca Paganico, who brought in pops of buffalo plaid, a fireplace, antler chandeliers and more. Combined with the simple and colorful targets, the space is nicer than any bowling alley out there, with the extra bonus that you don’t have to wear those shoes.
If this doesn’t have you making plans to turn off Netflix and actually leave your apartment in February, then we don’t know what will. For more details, head over to LumberjAxes and get throwing! And if we really needed to sweeten the deal, you can channel you best teen self and book one of their “cosmic” throwing nights (YASSSSSS!).
