APT#: The Pennsylvanian
Have you heard this phrase “glow up”? It’s the type of internet lingo circa 2017 that seems way too trendy to actually use IRL, but when you think about it, you kind of realize how useful it is… not only when referring to a person’s for-the-better style overhaul, but even an apartment’s.
If you’re looking for some serious residential glow up, there’s no better example than The Pennsylvanian downtown. While this historic building has always had an iconic, recognizable beauty from the outside, the former 19th-Century train station’s apartments hadn’t been updated since it was under the management of the prior owners. That all changed this past year, though, when the building’s apartments underwent a change of hand which included a total renovation, trading out the dated wall-to-wall carpet for sharp, modern finishes and dark, drab interiors for something clean, white and timeless.
If it has been more than a year since you have visited the property, it’s more than time for a second look. Enter through the domed Rotunda (undoubtedly the building’s most recognizable feature, and even one of the most recognizable in the entire city) and you’ll be greeted by a stunning display of what The New Yorker art critic Brendan Gill described as “one of the great pieces of Beaux-Arts architecture in America” (our namesake!). The Grand Hall features 11,000-square-feet of marble floors and ornately painted, hand-carved wall details, meaning that what many Pittsburghers wait in line to use as their wedding backdrop could soon be the backdrop to your daily routine.
The Pennsylvanian’s new updates take inspiration from the building’s past and blend it with modern finishes, drawing upon the former train station for things like the suitcase coffee tables and travel-inspired touches in the lobby, all the way down to thoughtful details like the building’s updated logo.
In the apartments themselves, renters will get to gaze out of the floor-to-ceiling windows at the Strip District and beyond, all while moving freely throughout the open living room and kitchen. Other details include state-of-the-art appliances, Quartz countertops and herringbone hardwood floors, as well as modern bathrooms with ceramic tile walls and nickel hardware. For the tech set, the apartments also boast Nest Thermostat and Protect systems and shiny new in-unit washers and dryers. While the apartments are undeniably “done”, we love that they’re just open enough for renters to add their own personal touches — we’re thinking sheer curtains against those stunning windows, leather barstools to play up the warm, white kitchen and a low-slung sectional sofa to make the most of the space in the open living area.
The Pennsylvanian also stands out from the crowd of similar buildings by keeping its amenities list useful and well-curated. You won’t find a La Croix fridge or a rooftop dog park here, but you will find something more akin to a New York City apartment — refined and style-driven. The fully-equipped gym is perhaps the building’s most utilized amenity, offering 24/7 access to its weights, cardio machines and exercise studio right within the building. Underground valet parking takes away the stress of finding a spot after a grocery run, while on-site dry cleaning ticks one more thing off your weekly errands list. The building is also pet-friendly throughout, so it feels like home from the minute you and your four-legged friend step through the door.
Perhaps the most unique amenity is the lower level self-checkout market, which makes it feel like you have a 24-hour convenience store right in your building — perfect for late-night snacks or entertaining friends at the last minute. And when you live at the Pennsylvanian, you’ll find that you always want to show off your new digs to friends.
