5 Winter-in-Pittsburgh Date Ideas
It’s winter in Pittsburgh.
It’s cold, it feels like the sun sets about an hour after it rises, your nose is runny, your skin is dry, and your post-holiday bank account is looking a little sad. We get it — but that doesn’t mean you should let your relationship (or your pursuit of one) suffer!
We’re here to help you add some romance to your life, even in this cold, dreary Pittsburgh winter. Here are five affordable, easy and—dare we say?—maybe even fun date night ideas to get you out of the house this weekend.
A candlelit stroll at Phipps. If you can’t quite spring for a last-minute vacation somewhere tropical, you can get a dose of humid weather and lush greenery at Phipps Conservatory. The gardens are open late (until 10 p.m.) on Fridays and Saturdays, and the candles lining the paths add an extra dose of romance to your date night out.
A cookbook dinner at home. Instead of shelling out the $$$ for a meal out (and changing out of sweats — it’s just a lot, we get it), opt for a new cookbook and some experimentation in the kitchen. We’re loving Alison Roman’s Nothing Fancy: Unfussy Food for Having People Over, Priya Krishna’s Indian-ish: Recipes and Antics from a Modern American Family and our standby favorite, Jessica Koslow of Sqirl’s Everything I Want to Eat.
A brunch date before the sun goes down. Who says date nights have to be nights? We’re all about the concept of the day date, especially when it gets dark out so damn early. Snuggle up with your sweetie over a cozy mid-morning meal, like the award-winning fried chicken sandwich at the Vandal, huevos rancheros at Fl. 2 or the dream-come-true breakfast pizza at DiAnoia’s.
A last-minute staycation at a hotel in the city. Though it’s on the higher end of the cheap date night spectrum, a staycation is a perfect option if it’s your anniversary, birthday or some other occasion worth celebrating. You can snag last-minute deals on hotels like Ace or Hotel Monaco through apps like HotelTonight — or, occasionally, just by calling and asking what’s available.
A winter dog park date. Spend some QT with your significant other and your pup by cozying up for a seriously wholesome, fun day date. Grab a coffee from a nearby café to keep your hands warm while you stroll (we’d suggest Pigeon Bagel if you’re headed to Frick Park or the Bureau if you’re headed to Highland Park), then spend an hour or so snuggling on a bench while you (and your dog!) enjoy the snowy scenery.
